On September 20th , 2017 Hurricane Maria was a Category 4 storm with winds of 155mph when it ripped through the Island of Puerto Rico. It was the worst storm to strike the Island in over 80 years. All of it's 3.4 million residents were put in an immediate humanitarian crisis. Clean water and electricity were not available for months after Maria. Homes were destroyed. Towns were flooded. The official death toll is 2975 people. It is a little more than a year later and while much of the Island has gotten back electricity and access to clean water, many Puerto Ricans are still recovering. Many homes have day long power outages anytime it rains. Homes still have tarps for roofs. More than 135,000 Residents have left the Island for the Continental United States due to Maria. It is estimated that half a million residents will leave by the end of 2019. But most Puerto Ricans have stayed working on recovery for as long as it may take. This picture story is a look at the state of Sport in Puerto Rico one year after Maria. There are many things that are not fixed yet. Athetes from all walks of life have done their best to move forward and compete, exercise, and live life since the storm. Still, there is much work to be done.
