Al Bello graduated with a Liberal Arts degree from the University of New York at Stony Brook in 1989. In March of 1990 Al worked as Darkroom Manager for The Ring boxing magazine. Al soon found his way by photographing boxing on a weekend basis while processing, and printing film during the week. In 1993 Al landed a position as a junior photographer at Allsport which is now a part of Getty images.
Since Joining Getty, Al has become Chief Sports Photographer in North America on a very talented staff and is assigned to cover sporting events and people in sport worldwide. Some of Al’s favorite events he has covered include several Super Bowls, World Series, and Stanley Cups. World events include The Pan Am, Asian, Goodwill and Commonwealth Games He has covered 4 Winter and 4 Summer Olympics Games. Al has been to 5 FINA Aquatic Championships. His Tennis favorites include the US, French Open, and Wimbledon. Al has also enjoyed covering World Cup Soccer. His favorite sport by far is boxing. Al has been to countless world title fights and boxing gyms in the last 20 years.
He has worked on editorial assignments for Sports Illustrated, ESPN the Magazine, Newsweek, Time, Maxim, The New York Times, and The LA Times. He has also worked on commercial assignments for Everlast, Canon, Discovery Channel, Nike, Sandisk, TYR, Speedo, The UFC, and Spike TV
Al’s photographic skills extend beyond event coverage. He enjoys doing work with athlete’s one on one. He is competent in studio and on location lighting. He can work in 35 mm, medium, or large 4x5 format. He is comfortable using film or digital cameras and is fully capable of transmitting photos on site. He also enjoys doing feature stories involving sport. Some of Al’s picture stories include “Cockfighting in Puerto Rico” “Santa Claus School” and a photo essay in 4x5 format on “The Faces of Boxing”
Al has won various awards from World Press Photo, National Press Photographers Association, Pictures of the Year International, China International Press Photographers Association, The New York Press Photographers Association, The Boxing Writers Association, The Football Hall of Fame, The Baseball Hall of Fame and The International Olympic Committee.
Al has also taught and lectured at The Eddie Adams Workshop, The National Press Photographers Association Short Course, The Richard Clarkson Workshop, The World Press Photo Foundation, The Rochester Institute of Technology, The Poynter Institute, The Wisconsin News Photographers Association, and several functions for Getty Images.
On a personal note, Al now lives in Merrick, New York. He enjoys spending every second of his off time with his wife Debbie of 15 years, his two children, Nicole (12) and Daniel (9) and his little Beagle named Maggie. He enjoys lifting weights, Scuba Diving, Video Games, and going to the movies.
